CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Gwen walked around the old mansion with Matthew, Leightyn, Avery, and Grant. She’d seen the man a few times with his wife, Evie, but didn’t realize how incredibly handsome he was up close. He was very tall, very fit, and hot!

“Gwen? Grant asked you a question,” said Avery.

“Sorry,” she blushed, “but you’re very good-looking. I mean, don’t tell Hex I said that or your wife, but it’s almost unnerving.”

“That’s the nicest thing I’ve heard in a long time,” smiled Grant. “Thank you. I was asking if you thought you’d need an elevator put in.”

“Oh, I didn’t even think about that, but I guess we should to be ADA compliant. I may have someone older or disabled working for me that needs to get upstairs. We’ll do all the fitting rooms downstairs.”

“And we want to keep the kitchen?” asked Grant.

“Yes, but it doesn’t have to be that large. I just want a space to have lunch or breakfast with the team, heat up coffee, and things like that. We may occasionally offer food or drink to the clients, but just a large commercial refrigerator and a few microwaves should be fine for that.

“I’d rather put in a few extra bathrooms in that space and definitely some storage rooms.” She opened her sketchbook to a colorful page, the one she’d been working on when Hex dripped all over it. “I need a room with spindles on it to hold hundreds of colors of thread. On the other walls, I need racks to hold fabric. It will look almost like a piece of artwork.”

“You know,” said Grant, “I was reading about Athabaskan culture, and I know that you use hides in your work in Alaska. Would you want a tanning room?”

“Oh, I never even thought about that,” she said, frowning. “I don’t know. I’m not sure how women feel about that in the lower forty-eight. I always tried to stay away from animal skins unless it was requested. I won’t lie, though; it makes my heart happy to think about working with that again.”

“I tell you what, we’ll put a room in where you can keep natural hides and skins. It will be a special request room only,” said Grant. “Security will be top line, developed by the boys at RP. We’ll have cameras, alarms, everything. We’re going to raise the whole building by five feet to make sure flooding doesn’t occur.”

“Can you do that? I mean, obviously, you can, but won’t the building fall?” she asked. Grant and Matthew smiled, shaking their heads.

“This old house is pretty sturdy,” smiled Matthew. “We’re going to make it sturdier and safer for you and your staff. Irene has arranged for some women to come and interview as seamstresses.”

“Wow, you guys really move fast around here, don’t you?” smiled Gwen.

“Hey, guys, come and look at this,” called Avery.

They followed the sound of her voice into the room that had once been a parlor. She pressed on a hidden doorway that opened into a beautiful room. The wood, although dusty, seemed to glow beneath the dust.
